Digestive Disorders- An Overview
Digestive disorders have become a common problem these days and the blame goes
to our lifestyle and poor food habits. Before getting into all the problems, we
must first understand what a digestive system is all about. Though we are all
aware of digestion and its importance, but we must also know the difficulties
that might arise due to improper digestion.
To begin with, let us understand what digestion is…
The food that we intake and the drinks we consume are to be transformed into
small molecules of essential nutrients and is then absorbed in our blood only to
be carried to the cells and throughout our body. Digestion is basically the
process used to break down these foods and the drinks into molecules, to be used
by our body for building and nourishing the cells and providing energy.
There is a typical method involved in the digestion process. It involves:
Mixing the food together.
Moving the food through the digestive tract.
Breaking down of the larger food molecules into smaller food molecules using a
chemical process.
Digestion is initiated in our mouth through which the foods and drinks are
consumed and the process is completed in the small intestine.
Any disruption in the normal process of digestion is known as a digestive
disorder. If there’s a disorder in the gastrointestinal or digestive system, it
is regarded as a form of digestive disorder. Some digestive disorder types might
affect various parts of our digestive system, while others might just affect one
or a single organ.
Digestive disorders are usually accompanied by common symptoms, such as
constipation, diarrhea, digestive tract bleeding, swallowing difficulties,
regurgitation, and many more. Some of the more common symptoms are abdominal
pain, appetite loss, flatulence, nausea and bloating. If these symptoms are
recurring problems in your life, you are actually experiencing digestive
disorders.
Indigestion is often the term used for indicating digestive problems, but it is
an inexact term as it might mean different problems for different people. Also,
when we talk of indigestion, it usually includes symptoms like nausea,
dyspepsia, regurgitation and vomiting and a globus sensation where it seems like
there is a lump in the throat. Though these symptoms might be a partial part of
digestive complications, but it’s definitely not the whole thing.
Digestive complications also tend to affect the bowel movements; people usually
experience constipation or diarrhea when they are suffering from any form of
digestive complications.
The prevalence of digestive complications is such that almost every year a few
millions Americans are detected with one or more digestive problems. The
complications can range from occasional stomach problems to chronic diseases as
well. Problems with the liver, pancreas and gallbladder are every common in the
nation.
Most of these digestive diseases are complicated in nature and it is even
difficult to eliminate the disease as the cause of the same remains undefined.
Improper food habits, stress and anxiety, certain medications, alcoholism,
smoking and hereditary factors are often considered as potential triggers if
digestive disorders. However, the exact cause is still a mystery.
Various treatment options for digestive disorders are available today and these
options can be used only as per the physician’s recommendation.
